Devastated Ant McPartlin told his mum in the hours after his drink-drive arrest: “I’ve really messed up this time.”
In a tearful heart-to-heart with Christine Woodhall after being quizzed by police, the troubled star also admitted he was burnt out.
A friend said: “Ant spoke to his mum soon after. He was in a complete state. It was a very emotional conversation.”
Christine was with Ant when he lost control of his black Mini and crashed head-on into one car before colliding with another.
Ant, 42, was said to be particularly upset that the first car contained a four-year-old girl.
No one was seriously hurt but the child’s father Faheem Vanoo, 41, claimed Ant had been “driving like a maniac” and “could have wiped out my family”.
The Britain’s Got Talent host is now back in rehab after seeking treatment last year for addiction to painkillers.
The insider said: “He’s absolutely devastated this has happened and he was beside himself that a child was involved. He is so sorry for hurting everyone around him.
“Everyone is hoping going back to rehab will help him get through it.”
