Heartbroken Spain Goalkeeper Santiago Canizares Announces Death Of His 5-Year-Old Son

Retired Spanish goalie Santiago Canizares has confirmed his five-year-old son has died.

The shot-stopper, who represented his country in three World Cups, announced the sad news on Friday.

He wrote on Twitter: “My son Santi has died.

“I think it should be me who tells you, in appreciation of all the show of support and affection I have received from you.

“He has passed away surrounded by peace and having understood his mission in this five years he has been with us.”

The youngster’s long battle with cancer was well-known about in Spain.

At the start of the month Canizares had to take time off work that his son’s fight against illness had suffered a setback.

Santi was one of the triplets born to the goalie and his wife Mayte Garcia in 2013. The couple have had four children including Santi, together.

Mayte posted a picture of their son playing on a beach, alongside the message: “My love, my life, my angel. Thank you for everything you have taught me and the peace you leave me with.

“I will breathe and I will live for you. Always with me. I LOVE YOU.”
