An experienced Cirque du Soleil performer has died after he plunged onto the stage during a show in Tampa, Florida.
The theatrical company announced on Twitter that Yann Arnaud fell while performing an aerial straps routine during the show VOLTA.
Mr Arnaud, 38, was rushed to hospital after the fall, where he later died.
“It was awful. You heard all the cries of the audience. There were children there and they were freaking out,” spectator Julian Martinez, who witnessed the accident, told local TV station WFLA.
The celebrated circus firm cancelled its final two Tampa shows while they work with authorities to investigate how the accident happened.
The entertainment group’s president, Daniel Lamarre, said: “The entire Cirque du Soleil family is in shock and devastated by this tragedy.”
