A HORROR crash between two articulated lorries and a van saw a driver airlifted to hospital while causing traffic chaos on the M25.
The motorway was shut off between junctions 8 and 9 near Leatherhead in Surrey, leaving motorists gridlocked, following the smash this morning.
A man was taken to hospital in a serious condition, Surrey Police said.
‘’The driver of one of the lorries was taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting. The occupants of the other vehicles suffered minor injuries”, a spokeswoman for the Force explained.
”It is hoped that the fourth lane of the motorway will reopen soon but motorists are advised that there are long delays on the clockwise carriageway.”
Anti-clockwise lanes have reopened, but three clockwise lanes remain shut, with 90-minute delays.
Highways England has told motorists on Twitter: ”Trapped traffic continues to be released past the scene. Long delays remain on the approach to the closure.”
Meanwhile drivers have tweeted of their frustration at being stuck in gridlocked traffic.
British racing driver, Tom Chilton, wrote: ”So I’ve been stuck for 2.5hrs and not moved on M25 between Jct8&9.
”Hope who ever has crashed up ahead is ok. #airambulance #crash #traffic #worldslargestcarpark #late”
Caroline Sargent posted: ”Just the 5 hr commute to work today then #M25 #shutdown”
