Two elderly tourists from the UK and New Zealand have been killed by an elephant.

The 68-year-old Briton and the 67-year-old New Zealander were attacked by an elephant accompanied by its calf at South Luangwa National Park in eastern Zambia.

The pair were on a walking safari when the animal charged at them at around 6.20am local time this morning.

Guides fired shots in an attempt to deter the elephant, but were unable to prevent the attack.
