A dad has been arrested after allegedly strangling his nine-month-old to death as he sexually assaulted her.
Tragic Savayah Mason was pronounced dead after the sickening attack in Houston, Texas.
Her 23-year-old father Luis Luna was arrested on Monday, a week after the killing.
Savayah died as a result of asphyxiation, investigators in the US said.
A court heard that Savayah’s mum dropped her off with her dad, but never saw her alive again.
Police were called shortly after midnight on August 24 to reports of an unresponsive child.
Luna, who has been charged with capital murder, initially claimed he woke up to discovered his daughter was not breathing.
He claimed it was an accident caused by straps in her cot, court documents reveal.
But an autopsy revealed she was asphyxiated during a sexual assault.
“When he laid her down, he buckled the straps the same way as if she was riding in a vehicle and believed he may have had the straps too tight and that maybe is what caused her death,” documents state.
The little girl’s heartbroken mum, Ya’Niece Mason, has started a fundraising page to pay for her daughter’s funeral.
She wrote: “You might have heard that I’m fundraising for the burial of my 8 month old daughter.
“This cause is very important to me because I was not prepared to plan a funeral for my child.”
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez posted on Twitter: “Heartbreaking. The worst type of cases. May this little angel rest in peace.”
