First pictures have emerged of a nurse who was allegedly stabbed with a pair of scissors at Royal Oldham Hospital.

Rumon Haque has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article after Achamma Cherian was attacked on a hospital ward on Saturday afternoon. The 57-year-old nurse was on duty at the hospital’s acute medical unit when she was attacked and left fighting for her life. Greater Manchester Police stated on Tuesday that she remained in hospital receiving treatment for her injuries. Haque, 37, from Royton, appeared before Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday in connection with the attack.

No pleas were entered, and Greg Kemp, defending, confirmed there would be no application for bail. Haque was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before the Crown Court in February. Wearing a grey sweatshirt and flanked by two prison officers, Haque was asked to identify himself and gave his name as “Mohammed Roman Haque”.

District Judge Jane Hamilton told the defendant: “The attempted murder is a matter that can only be dealt with by a crown court so the possession of a bladed article is going to go with it. You will next appear at Minshull Street Crown Court on February 18, in five weeks’ time. Between now and then you will be remanded in custody.”
