June Freedom Day ‘delayed until July 19’ – but social distancing may end earlier

Boris Johnson is said to be considering a four-week delay before the end of Covid-19 restrictions, as the Indian variant continued to push up infections.

With fresh figures showing case rates on the rise in every English region, proposals for a pause on the final stage of the Covid-19 roadmap from June 21 to July 19 were reportedly being discussed in Downing Street.

Under the proposals, which could be announced on Monday, a two-week review would take place, meaning the remaining social distancing measures could be dropped on July 5 – the half way point.

The number of coronavirus cases in the UK has increased by 8,125, a 30% increase from this time last week.

A further 17 deaths were today reported within 28 days of a positive Covid result.

Last Friday, June 4, the UK recorded 6,238 new Covid cases, which was a 49% increase in the infections reported the previous Friday.
