Sky Sports News criticised for ‘strange’ Prince Philip tweet

Sky Sports News has been criticised for a ‘strange’ tweet which encouraged people to watch its channel in the wake of Prince Philip’s death.

The broadcaster used its official account – which has 8.6million followers – to signpost people to tune into Sky News for an ‘important breaking story’ – without revealing any more details.

The tweet – sent just after Buckingham Palace announced the news – said in all capital letters: ‘Breaking news: Turn to Sky News for an important breaking story.’

One person responded: ‘There was no reason for you to tweet this’ while another said: ‘This is somewhat strange.’

The Duke’s death was announced by Buckingham Palace at midday. He was 99.

Some said the broadcaster was treating the news ‘like a transfer deadline day rumour’ while it was also called ‘clickbait.’

A similar notification was also sent out to subscribers’ mobile phones.
