Woman dies in bridge fall as tragedy closes motorway sparking huge traffic delays

A stretch of the M60 through Greater Manchester has been closed after a woman fell to her death from a bridge over the motorway.

The M60 has been closed near Ashton-under-Lyne for hours today.

Huge queues of traffic have been building along the stretch as emergency services closed the road to respond to the incident.

It is understood a woman has fallen from a bridge, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the woman has sadly died.

A police spokesperson said officers were called just after 10.30am to reports of concern for the welfare of a woman on a bridge near Junction 23 of the M60.

Police added: “The woman fell from the bridge a short time later. Emergency services attended, but despite their best efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries are on-going.”

All lanes in both directions have been shut since about 11am, Transport for Greater Manchester (TGM) say.
